An exceptional French 18th Century Louis XVI Period Marquetry Desk. This desk is known as a “bureau a cylindre”, referring to its curved pivoted opening in the middle. The wood work on this piece is spectacular: made of solid oak and featuring wonderful walnut veneer, the refined symmetrical motifs and overall sturdy build speak to the timeless quality of such antiques. The original handcrafted marquetry is in perfect condition and displays a wonderful book match veneer that really adds to its overall elegance. Dating from the Louis XVI period, this desk must have been used in a prestigious office space or living room area and was a sure mark of prominence at that period. This desk features two main lower drawers, a cylinder opening giving way to a main desk board or writing surface, and a “theatre” interior compartment with six niches and two more drawers. In effect, this Louis XVI period cylinder desk is in a pristine condition, whether it be the marquetry work, the cylinder opening, or the drawer compartments inside. Overall, this antique 18th century cylinder desk is a rare and unique item and truly captures the essence, craftsmanship and artistry of the Louis XVI period.
